The Howell Township School District is committed to providing educational opportunities necessary to fulfill each student's potential for personal and academic success. The vision of mathematics education for our students can be taken from the New Jersey Mathematics Standards:
To enable ALL of New Jersey’s children to acquire the mathematical skills, understandings, and attitudes that they will need to be successful in their careers and daily lives.
The philosophy of our program is the belief that mathematics is accessible, meaningful and connected to both previous mathematical learning and the real world. Exposure to mathematics should be rich and grounded in concrete experiences that bridge to the abstract. Our program is embedded in the Standards, and encompasses number sense, measurement, pattern development, data analysis and the mathematical processes.
Our program engages and develops students' imaginations, common sense, and critical thinking skills while meeting individual needs. It provides comprehensive instruction that underlies the appreciation and recognition that the role mathematics plays in the real world.
Pearson enVision Realize 2.0 is our newly updated mathematics program in grades K – 5. This program is a rigorous and challenging program that fosters conceptual understanding and number sense that is aligned to the Common Core State Standards (2010), as well as the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS). Realize 2.0 is leveled to meet various learning abilities with resources such as intervention activities, reteach pages, practice buddy, and many more. Adaptive homework and practice powered by Knewton allows personalized learning environments for our students in grades 3-5. Project-based learning, visual learning strategies, and hands-on activities provide students multiple opportunities to explore math content.

Big Ideas Math provides personalized learning for our 6th grade through 8th grade students. This blended learning platform allows teachers to provide students with multiple methods of instruction, differentiated lessons, as well as challenging activities. Tutorials are available for both students and parents to support the content in the classroom. Parents can stay connected or provide their child with additional help at home by accessing the videos.

In grades K-2, the standards had minimal to no revisions, therefore, not impacting the curriculum. Revisions in kindergarten such as, “Demonstrate fluency for addition and subtraction within 5” from “Fluently add and subtract within 5” will allow students more time to master their sums and differences to 5. In grades 3-5, revisions were focused on providing more detail to the standards such as capitalizing the letter “b” to properly reflect the formula for volume. Other additions included, but not limited to, adding millimeters to the 4th grade measurement domain, as well as, including non-standard units in both 4th and 5th grade. These revisions to the standards have provided more clarity and specificity to the expectations of the mathematics standards as well as continuity.
K-2 Math Curriculum
In grades 6-8, the mathematics standards had minimal revisions. In 6th grade, students will explore volume therefore, requiring formulas such as V=Bh. In mathematics, the capitalization of letters are critical and cannot be used interchangeably. The formula for volume of a right rectangular prism requires the formula V=Bh. Students need to differentiate the difference between a lower case “b” and an upper case “B” in a formula. In this example, the “B” must be capitalized since the “B” represents the area of the rectangle. In the original document the “b” was written with a lower case therefore, incorrectly portraying the formula mathematically. Other revisions included the integration of technology when sketching geometric shapes, as well as, using mathematical terminology, such as, transformed has provided clarity to the standards.

Higher General Level Math Course Placement Criteria
Mathematics Placement for Students Entering Grade 7
Students entering Grade 7 will be enrolled into one of the following courses: Mathematics 7 or Pre-Algebra 7. The placement process begins with a detailed overview of the students progress on the following primary identifying measures:
All indicators must be met in order to qualify for the pre-algebra 7 course. Secondary identifiers will include the grade 7 New Jersey Student Learning Assessment for Mathematics (if available) and Cognitive Abilities Assessment or CogAT. The Grade 7 NJSLA-M standardized assessment will indicate students' ability to perform in the exceeding expectations category based on students across the state in the same grade level. This score will only be used to assist students in qualifying for accelerated placement and not prevent them from being considered. If the grade 7 NJSLA-M score is available prior to the placement decision, and is higher than the grade 6 score, the grade 7 NJSLA score will replace the grade 6 score.
Accelerating from Math 7 to Algebra 8
Each year grade 7 students are considered for the grade 8 Algebra course. The criteria for consideration is below. Students that meet all three multiple measures listed below will be eligible to complete the IAAT assessment in the spring of grade 7. Students who meet the criteria below and score a stanine of 8 or above will be enrolled in grade 8 algebra.
Students enrolled in grade 8 algebra from Math 7 will be expected to complete the summer online learning module prior to September. Failure to complete the online module may result in a change in course. More information regarding the online module will be provided upon notification of course eligibility.
